Master of Information Technology
Course code: 2402 + 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time

This
course is a cooperative program offered by all the schools of the Faculty of
Information Technology. It provides a broad program in information technology,
enabling students to select specific areas for in-depth study or to construct a
program from a range of suitably advanced units.
The program aims to provide the conceptual and theoretical framework in which
students can appreciate and integrate new software and hardware technologies,
and, within an information technology context, use them to develop solutions to
complex problems in our society; and deepen students' theoretical knowledge in
specific areas so that they will have the intellectual and conceptual
foundation to play leading roles in the development of the information
technology industry.
The
normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian
bachelors degree in computing, computer science or a technical information
technology field.
Generally,
students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be
required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate
units that have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma. Where
credit is granted, the number of elective units that may be taken outside the
list of approved information technology postgraduate units may be reduced.
The
course consists of 72 points of coursework units plus the 0-point FIT9001 unit.
The requirement to complete FIT9001 only applies to on-campus students. The 72
points may include six or 12 points of individual project work or can comprise
48 points of units plus a 24 points minor thesis.
Of the units taken, at least eight (48 points) must be taken from the graduate
units (fourth and fifth-year level) offered by the Faculty of Information
Technology. At least four units (24 points) must be taken from units at a
fifth-year level. Up to four units (24 points) may be taken from graduate units
offered by other faculties at Monash, with approval from the course
coordinator. With the approval of the course coordinator, up to two foundation
(9000) units in addition to FIT9001 may be taken. FIT9001 is a 0-point unit and
must be taken during the first semester of study. Completion of FIT9001 is
required before students can enrol into their second semester of studies
(subject to approval).
