Synopsis: This unit is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts necessary for the planning, design, use and implementation of database systems. The main topics covered include motivation for the database approach, conceptual modelling, coverage of logical data models (hierarchical, network and relational data models), and the use of SQL and other facilities provided by database management systems.

Assessment: Assignment 1 (data retrieval): 20% + Assignment 2 (database planning, design and implementation): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 60% + Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit

Contact Hours: 2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of laboratory work per week

Prerequisites: BUS9520 or equivalent
