This course, offered by the School of Information Management and Systems, aims to further develop the knowledge and skills of practising IS/IM professionals who aspire to move into senior managerial positions within their chosen field. Students are required to complete at least one specialisation, and are encouraged to select a range of conceptual, practical and research-based units. The course can be studied full-time or part-time, and a limited number of units are available in off-campus learning mode.
The normal entry requirement is a recognised Australian bachelors degree with an information systems or information management specialisation with a distinction average and a minimum of two years of relevant full-time work experience in an information systems and/or information management-related job/field (or equivalent). Admission will also depend on a successful selection interview. An English Language Proficiency of 7.5 overall or above on academic IELTS and no band lower than 7 is required. Special entry is available to suitably qualified and experienced applicants. Prospective students without formal academic requirements would normally enter via the faculty's Executive Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school.
Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit and advanced standing. The granting of more than 24 points of credit or advanced standing is rare. Students who have been granted credit or advanced standing must still meet the specialisation and foundation unit requirements in order to complete this course.
To
qualify with the MIS, students must complete the requirements of part A and
part B, totalling 72 points of graduate units - a minimum of 60 points from
approved MIS units from SIMS and a maximum of 12 points of free-choice
electives, which may be taken outside those approved for the MIS and must be
approved by the course director for inclusion in part A. These electives can be
taken from outside SIMS or the faculty or from other faculties of the
university, with the approval of the course leader. The SIMS units in the MIS
are shown in the list below. Each student's course of study must include at
least one specialisation from information systems development, information
technology management, knowledge management, business intelligence, library and
information services, electronic recordkeeping and archiving, or e-business.
On-campus students are also required to complete FIT9001 (Masters transition
program). FIT9001 is a 0-point unit studied over four weeks (weeks three to
six) through four two-hour workshops. On-campus students must complete this unit
before enrolling in their second semester of study.
Students who successfully complete 24 points of study from SIMS graduate units
may exit the course with a Graduate Certificate in Information Management and
Systems. Students who successfully complete 48 points of study, of which at
least 36 points are from graduate units within SIMS, may exit the course with a
Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems.
Students must complete eight units (48 credit points) of approved study. Students must select between six and eight units (36 and 48 credit points) from the following specialisations and complementary units, and must complete at least one specialisation. Up to two units (12 credit points) of elective units outside those approved for the MIS may be approved for inclusion in part A.

Students who successfully complete the MIS may, depending on their unit choice, be eligible for professional accreditation/recognition by the Australian Computer Society, the Australian Library and Information Association, the Australian Society of Archivists, or the Records Management Association of Australia.
