Studying humanities develops general knowledge and specific intellectual skills relating to human thought and relations, such as the way we communicate or how the past has affected the present. Social science analyses and explains societies and the relationships of individuals within those societies. As well as their humanities and social science specialisations, students can also complete studies within the Bachelor of Arts from other faculties.*

Computer science is concerned with the science of computing, and the scientific design and use of computer hardware and software. Computer science is a broad discipline, encompassing software design and programming, the actual computing machinery, the theoretical foundations, and all of the applications of computing which pervade our modern society. This course provides an in-depth study of computing with an emphasis on the software, hardware and theory of computation to solve commercial, scientific and technical problems. It also explores software design and programming, computer hardware, the theoretical foundations of computing and its present and potential applications.

The Bachelor of Business Information Systems, a cooperative education program between the Faculty of Information Technology and industry, focuses on the applications of information technology in business and leads to a career in business information technology. The curriculum has been developed in consultation with the industry partners of the faculty and potential employers of graduates of the program. The program offers a broad-based degree, with core units spanning computer programming to business analysis. Two streams are offered - the coursework stream and the industry-based learning (IBL) stream.

The Bachelor Arts (Criminal Justice) degree provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the complexity of crime, to identify and evaluate the effectiveness or otherwise of the criminal justice process, and to consider new and radical alternatives for dealing with crime.
Students will compare and contrast regional, rural and urban crime and evaluate policies which are supposed to prevent crime. They will also study public safety, forensic psychology, causes of deviant behaviour, and security-related issues.

This course helps students understand issues applying to the study of journalism and the role of communication in modern society, and develop practical skills and experience in the field. The course addresses Australia in its multi-racial and multicultural context, and looks at the responsibilities in reporting Aboriginal affairs.
Particular attention is focused on the skills applicable across print, radio and television; desktop publishing; electronic journalism; narrowcasting, as well as broadcasting on television and radio; and local, regional and international journalism.
A comparative journalism approach and knowledge of a second language are encouraged, and there are opportunities for final-year students to take placements overseas.

Description
Students selected as deans scholars in arts will be eligible to choose the campus at which they wish to undertake their Bachelor of Arts program. The Deans Scholars Program applies only to the Bachelor of Arts. Specialised degrees, double degrees or double awards are not included in the program.
Participants in this program receive a scholarship which is renewable for each year of the course, subject to satisfactory academic performance (normally a distinction grade average).
Course progression requirements
The performance of deans scholars in arts will be evaluated at the end of each year. Students are expected to continue achieving at the same high level at which they entered the program (normally distinction level). Students who are unable to maintain the required level of performance in each year may forfeit their Deans Scholars Award.

The double award normally involves four years of full-time study. The first year consists of TAFE modules in professional writing and editing. In the second year, students take two level-one journalism units within Monash and complete the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE diploma. Students develop an understanding of the practical operations of the media, the social and cultural dimensions of mass communications, and the audiences, producers and policy-makers.

Structure
Students complete a compulsory drama and theatre studies major, performance major and arts minor, with additional studies chosen from a variety of arts disciplines.
Areas of study
Performing arts majors and minors are available in drama and theatre studies, music* and visual culture.** The primary major in the degree is in drama and theatre studies. Students need to obtain approval in order to study a major in music or visual culture.

Description
The course equips students for competent and ethical social welfare practice in an ever-changing social and political climate. The degree develops skills and knowledge for intervention in different fields of practice, advanced theoretical analysis and application, and social welfare practice from a management perspective.
Students complete a structured sequence in social welfare, including practice placements in community development and welfare agencies, together with studies in social policy, management in Indigenous society, sociology and psychological studies. They will also take an arts minor in Australian Indigenous studies, community studies, psychological studies, psychology or sociology.
