When students take the Bachelor of Information Systems
(Information Management) degree and the Bachelor of Education in combination,
they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study with
overload of six points in each of years two and three.
Graduates of this double-degree program will have completed qualifications that
allow entry into the information technology profession and/or the education and
training profession. Graduates will be eligible for employment as teachers in
Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to
check with local authorities. Opportunities also exist for further study with
overload.
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent including: units 1 and 2 - two units of mathematics (any); units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any); and a study score of at least 20 in any other three VCE studies.
To receive the awards of Bachelor of Information Systems
(Information Management) and Bachelor of Education, a candidate for the double
degree must successfully complete units totalling 204 points, consisting of the
following:
(a) Studies in information systems (108 points of specified core units).
Students will be required to overload by six points in years 2 and 3.
(b) Studies in education (96 points) - a series of units
relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum.
Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that
their major and minor studies in information technology must satisfy the
requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A
and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year and the requirements for
employment laid down by the Victorian Department of Education and Training and
non-government authorities.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a
candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that
discipline.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the
education component, until the final year which will be entirely education,
including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field
visits to different educational sites including structured teaching experience.
Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits.
The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.
For the information systems component of the double degree, units
will be offered at the Caulfield campus.
This component of the course requires the completion of 108 credit points of
core units made up of the following:
For the education component of the double degree, students will choose either secondary or primary education units. Secondary education units will be offered at Clayton and primary units at Peninsula (except for EDF1301 and EDF1302, which will be undertaken at Clayton campus in year 1).

* Note that for the BIS(IM)/BEd primary stream, all information systems units
are to be undertaken at the Caulfield campus and all education units are to be
undertaken at the Peninsula campus, except for EDF1301 and EDF1302, which will
be undertaken at Clayton campus.
Students must successfully complete teaching practice, which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised practicum in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.
This course consists of four years of full-time study, with overload or equivalent part-time study taken on-campus including school or industry visits for practicum placement. To complete the course in four years, students will need to overload their information systems component in years two and three. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
