Synopsis:

Objectives: By the completion of this unit you should have developed an understanding of the range of roles and obligations faced by teachers; be able to situate teachers' work in the social, educational and cultural milieu; have examined and analysed the many depictions and representations in film, literature and other media which have shaped society's images of the teacher; have critiqued the inspirational role depicted of teachers; have examined in detail the world of work of the modern teacher; demonstrate an understanding of the multifaceted nature of the teachers' world; demonstrate an understanding of the place and role of teachers in modern society and the ways in which historical, political and sociocultural factors including class and gender shape their world and their work.

Assessment: An essay (2000 words) 50%: and Interview/fieldwork: 50%.
