Synopsis:

Objectives: The learning objectives of this unit are to explain the similarities and differences among theories of children's early language development; outline the social and cultural influences on children's emergent literacy development; outline the influences care-givers and families have on language development; differentiate between the language and social practices of the home and school settings; outline and explain the nature and structure of the English literacy curriculum as a Key Learning Area; outline and explain the impact of information technologies on children's literacy development; outline and explain a coherent model of reading; describe a coherent model of children's reading development; administer, score and interpret a child's Reading Observation Survey.

Assessment: Written assignment (2000 words) 60%, written examination 40% + Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance and completion of tutorial tasks and homework.
