Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to develop a clear and detailed description of learning for understanding; identify poor learning tendencies as well as deep and surface approaches to learning and appreciate the factors that promote their use; recognise ways by which social and cultural factors can influence learning; identify situations likely to lead to cognitive overload; describe some of the learning theories of Ausubel, Gayne, Skinner and Bruner and of the constructivist theory of learning and some influences these have had on education; recognise major representations of ability; psychometric, theory of multiple intelligences, level of operational thought, and cognitive strategies; and from their own view of ability; explain their own use of cognitive strategies in learning contexts, and be able to make decisions about their selection and application; discuss a definition of quality learning and metacognition; distinguish between interest and motivation and identify sources of each of these in learning situations; demonstrate some basic skills in information technology; word processing and use of email.

Assessment: Written assignment (1000 words): 25% + A major assignment based on practicum experience (1600 words): 40% + A written assignment (1400 word equivalence): 35% + Attendance requirement: Eighty percent + Hurdle requirement: 5 days observation.
