Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of mathematics in the primary school curriculum; be aware of all content areas outlined in appropriate documents; appreciate the importance of sorting, classifying and other early number activities appropriate to young children learning mathematics; have developed a sound approach to the teaching of the four operations with whole numbers; have developed techniques that link mathematics to practical applications particularly in relation to measurement and space; be developing an understanding of the role of information technology in the mathematics classroom.

Assessment: A written report based on observation of mathematical tasks undertaken by children. 2000 words: 50% + An examination: 50% + Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at tutorials.
