When students take the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Education degree in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study at a normal course load for each year. A feature of these courses is their interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some units.
On completion of the double degree, graduates will be eligible for employment as teachers in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities. They may also consider employment in a wide range of occupations including journalism, professional writing, publicity, library services, research and administration.

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of
Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete units
totalling 192 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in arts (96 points) including a major study (three years of study
in a single discipline), a minor study (two years of study in a single
discipline), and four additional units
(b) Studies in education (96 points) including a series of units relating to
the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum
placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that
their major and minor studies in arts must satisfy the requirements for the
study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence =
method set) in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down
by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a
candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that
discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the
education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education,
including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field
visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching
experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their
field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of
Education program.

Students must successfully complete teaching practice which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised practicum in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.
The BA/BEd degree consists of four years of full-time study or eight years of part-time study. Most studies must be taken on-campus but a few may be available in off-campus mode. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
