    Economic statistics

    Prerequisite: Nil

    Objectives On completion of this subject student should be familiar with the ways in which descriptive statistical methods may be used to derive information from economic data; have a working knowledge of the applicability and limitations of some of the statistics produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics; have an understanding of the laws of probability, random variables and the normal distribution; have an understanding of simple methods of survey sampling; have an understanding of basic statistical inference involving estimation and hypothesis testing; have an understanding of the simple regression model, its use in trend analysis and forecasting.

    Synopsis The subject will cover the following topics: an introduction to statistical methods as an aid to description and decision making; collection, presentation and interpretation of data; descriptive statistics; calculation and interpretation of index numbers and their applications to economic measurements (such as CPI); introduction to probability, random variables, probability distributions (including the normal distribution); introduction to random sampling and the sampling distribution of the sample mean; economic surveys; estimation and testing of the population mean; introduction to simple linear regression and its application to linear trend analysis for time series; its application to economic forecasting.
