Objectives This subject aims to develop knowledge of the diversity of processes and systems available to operations managers and to equip students with the skills to contribute to workplace productivity improvement. It will build on elementary marketing concepts and previous studies of management theory in emphasising the differences between service and manufacturing activities, the consequent organisational implications and the need for an integrated approach to business strategy.
Synopsis This subject commences with an introduction to operations management, operating systems and productivity. The scope of management processes and systems is then illustrated by specific examples of activities in planning (forecasting, design, capacity and facility); organising (production scheduling, JIT, and services scheduling) and controlling (quality, project management, work measurement).
