Recruitment, selection, placement: industry context and processes

Objectives This subject examines the changing function, role and scope of recruitment, selection and placement processes within the private and public sectors of the human resource consulting industry. On successful completion of this subject students should be able to (1) explain the importance of professional ethics and the legal requirements of managing the essential client/consultant relationship; (2) appreciate the complex psychological, developmental and sociological factors which affect individuals and groups entering, remaining in and exiting the workforce; (3) identify the key operational skills needed to manage a small to medium HR consulting practice with an emphasis on adopting a systems approach and flexible project management models. (4) assess the efficacy of a selected range of personnel recruitment, selection, and placement processes and practices. Lastly, identify and discuss key communication techniques essential to effective client management.

Synopsis Recruitment, selection and placement processes are examined within the industry context of the expanding field of human resource consulting. Close attention is given to professional ethics and compliance to legal requirements. In a period of rapid change, new and emerging forms of career and client management are explored. Appropriate methods for taking an order, describing the job, attracting the right person, assessing applicants, shortlisting and selection are examined. Current practice and trends in operations and client management within the HR consulting industry are discussed.

Assessment: Assignment one (up to 2000 words): 20% · Assignment two (up to 2500 words): 30% · Examination (three hours): 50%
