Description

This Master of Education specialisation focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning; in workplaces, communities and in local, regional, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities. Taking units within this specialisation will deepen the knowledge of those interested in leading and developing individuals and communities through workplace and vocational learning, regional education, global and intercultural education, through partnerships, community building and policy making.

Requirements

In order to graduate from D6002 Master of Education with a specialisation in adult learning students must complete two or three enhanced professional learning units as follows (24 or 36 points):

Description

Students studying counselling at Monash enrol in a skills-based course that investigates evidence-based theories and frameworks related to counselling and psychotherapy. Students learn to relate various counselling approaches and strategies across developmental stages (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age) while developing a deeper understanding of themselves, their personal values and preferred styles of counselling. The ethical practice of counselling and skills to write case notes and make appropriate referrals are covered. Counselling prepares professionals to work in a wide variety of fields including careers counselling, education, child and family services, child protection services, child psychology, health policy, counselling, family counselling, health services management and rehabilitation counselling. Students are taught by academics with extensive experience working as professional counsellors and/or psychologists. In addition to their academic study, students undertake a minimum of 300 hours of clinical counselling experience.

Description

This Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation qualifies graduates to teach children from birth to 12 years of age in childcare, kindergartens, preschools and primary schools, as educators spanning both the early childhood and primary years. Students study in depth how to engage children in meaningful learning through innovative pedagogical practice.

Credit for prior studies

Students are awarded one full year (48 credit points) of credit towards the first year of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Early Years and Primary Education on the successful completion of the Diploma of Children's Services or equivalent as determined by the faculty. Where the faculty has an articulation agreement with an institution, credit for prior studies as outlined in the agreement will be honoured.

Description

This Master of Teaching specialisation qualifies graduates to teach children from birth to 12 years of age in childcare, preschool and primary school. Students develop an understanding of learning at the heart of teaching and acquire a perspective of teaching as the power to change. They learn how to support children's transition to and within the early years of schooling, and actively engage with contemporary theories, concepts and practices of early years and primary education. Students learn about the range of local and international services and social/cultural contexts of provision for children aged birth to 12 years, and focus on the key elements of the primary curriculum including English and literacies, mathematics, arts, humanities, science, technology, and health and physical education. They develop abilities to practise and report on effective assessment of children's development, and the skills to work with families and communities. They learn how inclusive practices meet a diversity of student needs and build a repertoire of strategies to manage classroom settings. Professional understanding and skills are extended through 70 days of supervised professional experience, and students learn to generate and reflect on evidence to evaluate their practice and build professional judgement. Description

This program provides doctoral (PhD) students with the opportunity to focus on developing knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline, as well as developing professional skills that will support their career ambitions.

Each student's research will be supported by the development of a range of skills that will help them to become more efficient researchers, ultimately improving the quality of the research and developing generic/transferable skills of value to prospective employers.

Program requirements

All research students will be required to undertake compulsory training in the following areas:

  • research integrity
  • student induction, including occupational health and safety (if required).

Professional development component

Students must, in consultation with their supervisor(s), satisfactorily complete a minimum of 120 hours of graduate research professional development activities:

  • 80 hours (minimum) of general professional development from the Graduate Researcher Development module, delivered through the Monash Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR).
  • 40 hours (minimum) of discipline-specific professional development, from the Discipline Enhanced Development Module, delivered through the faculty.

Students will discuss with their supervisors which optional activities best suit their interests and area of study and complete any mandated activities. Students are required to update their supervisors on their progress toward achieving the required hours of professional development activities.

It is a requirement of the Discipline Enhanced Development module in this program that students complete the following mandatory activity:

  • Students whose basis of admission to the PhD course was a Bachelor of Education (Honours) or Master of Teaching from Monash, commenced in 2015 or later, complete a mandatory 40-hour (minimum) activity entitled 'Research project design'.

Students may be required to complete specific activities offered in the Graduate Researcher Development module offered through MIGR.

Attendance will be monitored to ensure hours are accurately recorded.

Students may also be directed or encouraged to attend and make presentations at various forums throughout their candidature.

The units below comprise the enhanced professional learning options for students taking a general stream in the Master of Education. A general stream allows students to advance their professional interests across a broad range of unit choices. Description

This Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation qualifies graduates to teach students from 12 to 18 years of age in secondary schools in specific curriculum areas. Students develop an understanding of adolescent learning and the nature of education, classroom teaching and practice in schools, education and its relationship to society and curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation. Students complete units which qualify them to teach up to Year 12 in two specialist teaching areas. The Secondary Education specialisation is taken as a double degree; the unit choices within the partner degree course determine which subjects graduates are qualified to teach in secondary schools.

Description

This Master of Teaching specialisation qualifies graduates to teach children from 12 to 18 years of age in secondary schools in specific curriculum areas. Students develop an understanding of learning at the heart of teaching and acquire a perspective of teaching as the power to change. They develop their understanding of teaching and learning approaches for secondary school as these address adolescents' cognitive, social and emotional development. Students widen their appreciation of teaching approaches to engage adolescents and learn to effectively assess and report on their learning. Specialist study provides the knowledge required to become a teacher in two subject areas such as such as English, mathematics, the sciences, history, social education, languages, the arts, business, health and physical education, or applied/vocational learning. Students learn how inclusive practices meet a diversity of student needs and build a repertoire of strategies to manage classroom settings. Professional understanding and skills are extended through 60 days of professional experience, and students learn to generate and reflect on evidence to evaluate their practice and build professional judgement. This specialisation prepares students to become effective and proactive leaders and educators in secondary school education.

Description

The Master of TESOL prepares students as language teachers for a variety of Australian and international educational settings. Students explore the connections between theories and practices of additional language acquisition, principles of language teaching and learning, and social and cultural contexts in language learning and use. The course covers areas such as teaching and learning additional languages, content-based learning, curriculum development and assessment, as well as critical and analytical skills to discuss research in the field of TESOL and apply it in professional contexts.

Requirements
