Synopsis

This unit further develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about the learning and teaching of primary school mathematics. The focus is on the effective learning and teaching of outcomes in the measurement and geometry strand at levels Foundation to Year 8. Students engage with and critically reflect upon activities and approaches for developing understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning capacities associated with shape, using units of measurement, location and transformation, and geometric reasoning. Students engage with research on how children learn and explore summative and formative assessment strategies.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. plan for the effective teaching of outcomes associated with the measurement and geometry strand at levels Foundation to Year 8
  2. facilitate a range of learning activities that develop and enhance children's understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning capacities
  3. understand the range of factors that influence learning outcomes and employ strategies to address individual learning needs
  4. harness information and communication technologies (ICTs), e.g. interactive whiteboards, tablet PCs, web 2.0, and calculator learning technologies, in their teaching repertoire
  5. select and use a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate children's learning
  6. identify and discuss a range of pedagogical issues, e.g. student affect, the evaluation and improvement of teaching programs and professional learning in primary mathematics education, and apply research skills to produce innovative responses.

Assessment

Research analysis of how children learn geometry and measurement (2000 words, 50%)
Research-informed program of work with assessments (2000 words, 50%)
