When students take the Bachelor of Science degree and the Bachelor of Education degree in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study at a normal course load for each year. A feature of this course is its interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some units.
Upon completion of the double degree, graduates will have a sound preparation for entry into the science and/or education and training professions and have developed a broad cross-disciplinary approach to professional development and working in the community. Graduates will be eligible for employment as teachers in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities. Opportunities exist for further study.
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent including: units 1 and 2 - two units of mathematics (any); units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any).
To receive the awards of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of
Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete units
totalling 192 points consisting of:
(a) Studies in science (96 points). Students must complete a major sequence in
a science discipline (three years of study in a single discipline - normally 12
points at level one, 12 points at level two and 24 points at level three), a
minor sequence in a different science discipline (two years of study in a
single discipline - 12 points at level one and 12 points at level two), and two
additional first-year units. During their second year of study, students must
also complete the units:
(b) Studies in education (96 points). Students
must complete a series of units relating to the theory and practice of
education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that
their major and minor studies in science must satisfy the requirements for the
study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence =
method set) in their fourth year, and the requirements for employment laid down
by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally, to qualify for a teaching method in fourth year, a candidate will
require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the
education component, until the final year which will be entirely education,
including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field
visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching
experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their
field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of
Education.

Students must successfully complete teaching practice which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised practicum in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.
This course consists of four years of full-time study or equivalent part-time study taken on-campus, with school or industry visits for practica. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
