Bachelor of Multimedia Business and Computing


General information

The Bachelor of Multimedia Business and Computing gives students broad IT and business competencies and prepares students for professional careers in a wide range of information technology areas. This degree is also intended to provide students with a strong basis for longer-term transition to a strategic management role.

Entry requirements

The Bachelor of Multimedia Business and Computing (BMBC) was available via direct entry for the first intake in 2002. From 2003 onwards, the BMBC will be available via VTAC entry with a requirement of at least 25 in VCE units 3 and 4 of English (any), and successful completion of units 3 and 4 of mathematics (any) (or equivalent).

Employment

This degree aims to produce graduates who will work in both the public and private sectors as IT and business professionals.

Honours year

Outstanding students who wish to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of aspects of multimedia computing may choose to take a fourth year of study, called an honours year. Completion of an honours year is essential for students who wish to pursue a research career. Entry into the Bachelor of Multimedia honours year will require completion of the Bachelor of Multimedia Business and Computing degree, or equivalent qualification, with an overall grade average of credit.

Course structure

The pass degree involves 144 credit points of study made up of the following components:

Electives (36 points)

Electives will comprise units of study chosen by the student to broaden their interests or to develop in depth their understanding and skills in particular areas of multimedia, business, programming and systems development which suit their interests and aptitude. Examples of relevant fields include advanced marketing, the technology of multimedia, information law, information systems, graphic design, communication and electronic commerce.

No more than 60 points of first-year units may be counted towards the degree.
The core units and studio units are offered only during the day at the Berwick campus. Specialisation and elective units may be taken in any mode at any Monash campus.

First year

The first-year core units will build student skills in the areas of management, communication, accounting, programming and marketing.

Second year

The second-year units will build on the material covered in the first-year core and cover more advanced topics in the tools and techniques of multimedia and business systems development. This level will also introduce students to database management systems and the scripting programming languages used for internet programming.

The third-year units will explore the use of security, logistics and fulfilment, performance measurement and multimedia tools for business.
