Systems security (6 points)

Synopsis: The unit examines the range of threats to systems and transactions, and the mechanisms for prevention or recovery, as well as issues of organisational responsibility. Topics will include: the nature and range of systems security threats, legal issues, security policies, counter-measures; confidentiality, authenticity, non-repudiation; infrastructure for digital certification and authentication; operating systems' security; Internet security, hardware and software firewalls, security gateways; database security; securing transactions. Protection of computer software. Costs and resourcing of security policies.The unit combines theroetical with practical topics.

Assessment: Three assignments (45%) Attendance (5%) Examination (50%)

Contact Hours: Two hours of lecture per week two hours of tutorial session per week, 8 hours of self-directed study and assignment work

Prerequisites: MMS2802 Internet Programming
