Bachelor of Business and Commerce


General information

Course code: 2224 Course abbreviation: BBusCom
The Bachelor of Business and Commerce provides an international degree in business and commerce. The course is designed to provide maximum flexibility and to allow depth and breadth in the study of the major business and commerce discipline areas. Its structure provides the capacity to tailor applications and focus in different contexts and different environments while ensuring knowledge of the theory, principles and core elements in the relevant discipline areas.

Entry requirements

GCE A level: 14 points (two or three subjects); Hong Kong A level: 12 points (two or three subjects); OAC: 70 per cent; STPM: 14 points (two or three subjects); Sri Lankan A level: 18 points (two or three subjects); Australian Year 12: 70 ENTER; MUFY: 230; IB: 24.
Mathematics: GCE O level; Year 11 or equivalent.
English: TOEFL 580 and TWE 5 or computer-based TOEFL score of 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 5; IELTS 6.0 with a score of at least 6 for each individual band; or GCE A level with a grade of C or above.

Course structure

This structure applies for students commencing in 2000 and beyond. The degree program comprises 24 six-point subjects (144 points) that are normally completed by full-time students at a rate of four subjects each semester, with two semesters per year, over a period of three years. The degree requirements are:
(a) A core of six compulsory first-year subjects comprising one subject from each of the faculty's six discipline groupings (accounting, business law, business statistics, economics, management and marketing). The six individual core subjects are:

(b) Up to 10 subjects (60 points) may be taken at first-year level.
(c) At least six subjects (36 points) at third-year level, of which at least four (24 points) must be taken from subjects offered by the faculty on the home campus.
(d) Up to six subjects (36 points) in disciplines taught by other faculties.
(e) At least one major must be chosen consisting of at least eight subjects (48 points) from the faculty disciplines/areas of study, including at least two subjects (12 points) at each of second and third-year levels.
(f) At least four non-compulsory subjects must be outside the main field of study.
The Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 of Malaysia requires students to take three subjects: Malaysian studies, National language (there is one subject for Malaysian citizens and another for citizens of other countries), and either Islamic studies (Muslim students) or Moral studies (other students). Credit provision and transfer

Students who might, at some future stage in their studies, apply to transfer to another Monash University campus are strongly advised to discuss their intentions with a student adviser when commencing the Bachelor of Business and Commerce and whenever selecting subjects.

Transfer to the BBusCom at other campuses

The Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree has been introduced at other Monash campuses. Students may apply to transfer to one of these campuses at any time. Applications for campus transfer are subject to the approval of the faculty.

Transfer to other degrees of the faculty

This degree enables students to transfer into other courses offered by the faculty in Australia, subject to successful completion of appropriate subjects. The required academic achievement level needed to gain a transfer as well as the extent of credit for subjects completed will depend upon the program and major studies undertaken in line with the following transfer options:

To proceed in any specialised discipline area normally a credit in the subject(s) in that area is required. The program of study enables transfer with full credit up to first-year for the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics and after three semesters of study for the Bachelor of Business (tagged) programs. Beyond this time period the level of credit given on articulation will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
