Bachelor of Business and Commerce/Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation

Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Business and Commerce and Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation degrees. When students take this double degree, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study with overload of 6 points in year 3 and year 4.

Course objectives

The major aim of this double-degree program is to foster the development of confident and competent professionals, combining knowledge and skills from the fields of business, sport and outdoor recreation.

Course structure

To receive the awards of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce and the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation, a candidate must successfully complete units totalling 204 points, consisting of the following:

(a) studies in business/commerce (108 points) chosen from units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Peninsula), which must include:

(i) the following six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) completion of a business major sequence of at least eight units (48 points) including at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year levels. (One core unit from part (i) may form part of the 48 points requirement).

(iii) a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(iv) a minimum four third-year-level units (24 points).

(b) studies in sport and outdoor recreation (96 points) chosen from the Faculty of Education, which must follow the course requirements as set out below.

First year

Sport and outdoor recreation units (totalling 24 points):

  • EDF1602 Biophysical foundations of human movement A
  • EDF1603 Biophysical foundations of human movement B
  • EDF1604 Outdoor recreation education
  • EDF1606 Introduction to sport and outdoor studies

plus the following business/commerce units (totalling 24 points):

  • AFW1001 Introductory accounting A
  • ECW1101 Introductory microeconomics
  • MGW1010 Managing people and organisations
  • MKW1120 Marketing theory and practices
Second year

Sport and outdoor recreation units (totalling 24 points):

  • EDF2232 Australian ecology and nature studies
  • EDF2601 Adventure education
  • EDF2602 Coaching and instruction
  • EDF2604 Leadership and programming

plus the following business/commerce units (totalling 12 points):

  • BTW1200 Business law
  • ETW1102 Business statistics
  • 12 points of major approved business/commerce studies
Third year

Sport and outdoor recreation units (totalling 24 points):

  • EDF2603 Swimming and water safety
  • EDF3603 Wilderness expedition
  • EDF3605 Risk management and emergency response
  • EDF3609 Experiencing the Australian landscape
  • 24 points of major approved business/commerce studies
  • one business/commerce studies elective
Fourth year

Sport and outdoor recreation units (totalling 24 points):

  • four approved sport and outdoor recreation electives*
  • 6 points of approved major business/commerce studies
  • 6 points of approved major or elective business/commerce studies
  • 18 points of business/commerce studies electives

* BSOR elective units: EDF1605 (Lifespan physical activity and wellness), EDF2607 Community physical activity and wellness , EDF3604 (Camp planning and practice), EDF3607 (Social issues in sport and outdoor recreation), EDF3608 (Sport and movement education), EDF3610 (Research/project in sport and outdoor recreation), EDF3611 (Advanced outdoor recreation practice), EDF4161 (Sports injury prevention).

Professional recognition

Graduates of the program will have qualifications which enable them to enter the sport and outdoor recreation and tourism industries supported by a sound knowledge of business/commerce.
