Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education degrees.

Students complete a major specialisation in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting; Asian development and transition; business law and taxation; competition, regulation and public policy; econometrics and business statistics; economics; finance; human resource management; information, strategy and decision-making; international commerce; labour and employment; management; or marketing. Students should ensure that commerce unit choices meet the requirements of their chosen teaching specialisations. The three specialisations available include economics, accounting and business management.

Course objectives

This double-degree course provides the opportunity to focus on commerce and business concepts as well as the theory and practice of teaching, and qualifies graduates as secondary school teachers in Victoria.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education, a candidate must successfully complete units totalling 204 points from the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton), consisting of the following:

(a) studies in commerce (108 points) chosen from units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton), which must include:

(i) six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) at least two units (12 points) from the following list:

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii) a major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third year). All units taken as part of the major specialisation will be taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus.

(iv) a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(v) a minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(vi) in order to meet the prerequisites for specialist discipline teaching units, students must include at least four economics units and four accounting units, or at least four economics units and four management units.

All units in the commerce component will be taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

(b) studies in education (96 points) chosen from the Faculty of Education.

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in commerce must satisfy the requirements for the study of two specialist discipline* teaching unit sets (A and B sequence equals one specialist discipline teaching set) in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching discipline, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.

Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.

Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator prior to commencement of the relevant year.

Fieldwork

Students must successfully complete teaching practice, which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.

Professional recognition

On completion of the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Education program of studies, graduates will have a sound preparation for entry into the business and/or the education and training professions. Graduates will be eligible for employment as secondary school teachers in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities.
