The variety of life on earth; the global environment and its basic natural systems; and the five kingdoms of life. Structure and function of natural systems especially the interrelationships between geological, climatological and ecological processes. The nature of Australian ecology and the evolution of Australian ecosystems. Fieldwork involves an introductory study of a local habitat.


Upon successful completion of this unit students should have critically reviewed an essay about Australia's population and environment; explored ecosystems including flora and fauna investigation techniques; developed skills in different ways of representing the environment; developed a collaborative nature book and ecological fieldwork journal; visited Moonlit Sanctuary, Pearcedale Conservation Park and participated in a walk that involves investigation of the local flora and fauna from different cultural, historical and scientific vantage points; developed basic biological and botanical knowledge so they can learn to read the environment.


Essay (1500 words): 30%
Ecological Fieldwork Journal (2500 words): 70%.
