When students take this double degree, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study with overload of 6 points in years 3 and 4. Course objectivesThe major aim of this double degree program is to encourage the development of confident and competent professionals, combining knowledge and skills from the fields of business, commerce and education. It provides the opportunity to focus on commerce and business concepts as well as the theory and practice of teaching, and qualifies graduates as secondary school teachers in Victoria. Course structureTo receive the awards of Bachelor of Business and Commerce and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 204 points consisting of: (a) studies in Business and Commerce (108 points), which must include: (i) six compulsory core units (36 points) in business and commerce
(ii) a business and commerce major of at least 8 units (48 credit points), with at least 2 units (12 credit points) being completed at each of second and third-year levels (iii) a maximum of 8 first-year level units (48 credit points) in business and commerce (iv) a minimum of 4 third-year level units (24 credit points) in business and commerce. (b) studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included. Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in business and commerce must satisfy the requirements for the study of two specialist discipline* teaching unit sets (A and B sequence equals one specialist discipline teaching set) in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching discipline, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines. This will require completion of a major and minor sequence in the Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree with these sequences being chosen from the following areas - Accounting, Economics and Management. Please refer to the Bachelor of Business and Commerce handbook entry for unit details. Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program. * See the ‘Specialist discipline units’ entry earlier in this section of the handbook for lists of approved units. FieldworkStudents must successfully complete teaching practice which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed. Professional recognitionOn completion of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce/Bachelor of Education - secondary program of studies, graduates will have a sound preparation for entry into the business and commerce and/or education and training professions.
