Synopsis

On completion of this unit students should have an understanding of: the nature of managerial work in organisations; theories of management and their historical development; the management of people as individuals and groups; the importance of leadership and motivation; the principles by which change is introduced into organisations; the key factors in the organisation's environment that impact on how managers and organisations work.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

• define managerial work in organisations and understand the theoretical and cultural bases of management knowledge;
• identify the different components of the organisation and its environment when understood as both a system and a sub-system;
• understand and contrast perspectives on a range of contemporary management issues within a selected cultural context;
• apply university-standard research and essay writing skills, with appropriate referencing and essay presentation.

Assessment

On-campus: Two written assignments: 40%
Tutorial participation: 10%
Examination (2 hours): 50% Off-campus: Two written assignments: 50%
