Course description

This double-degree program is a unique, interdisciplinary degree which focuses specifically on the employment and training needs of those seeking to work in the expanding sport and outdoor recreation industries. The course provides attractive sequences of studies for students in a number of disciplinary areas including education, business/management, tourism, environmental science and sports science.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 192 points consisting of:
(a) Studies in sport and outdoor recreation (96 points), including studies in academic disciplines appropriate for the sport and recreation industry and/or teaching at the primary level and the adult and vocational education sector.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.
Off-campus fieldwork placement in school settings (mainly in Victoria but also in wider Australia, North America and the South Pacific) is an integral part of the course for every student. Other off-campus fieldwork activities provide students, as individuals or in small groups, with opportunities to collect data, test theories, and observe phenomena relevant to all areas of education.

This outline shows the sequence of studies for students wishing to qualify as a primary health and physical or outdoor education teacher. It gives a general indication of how the course will progress. It is subject to change without notice.

* BSOR electives: EDF2232 (Australian ecology and native studies), EDF3603 (Wilderness expedition), EDF3604 (Camp planning and practices), EDF3605 (Risk management and emergency response), EDF3607 (Social issues in sport and outdoor recreation), EDF3609 (Experiencing the Australian landscape), EDF3610 (Research/project in sport and outdoor recreation), EDF3611 (Advanced outdoor recreation practice), EDF4161 (Sports injury prevention), BIO3731 (Nutrition, fitness and conditioning), EDF4701 (Field placement 1), EDF4702 (Field placement II).
# Students wishing to major in physical education are required to complete the AUSTSWIM certificate, which is included in unit EDF2603 (Swimming and water safety).

Fieldwork

Students must successfully complete teaching practice which consists of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.

Professional recognition

On completion of the double degrees, graduates will be qualified for employment as primary school teachers (including health and physical education if the approved unit sequence is followed) or in the sport and outdoor recreation field. Graduates will be eligible to teach in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities.
