Gippsland Second semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: Theoretical and practical outdoor recreation practices will be examined in educational, commercial and community contexts (i.e. canoeing, bushwalking, scuba diving, remote first aid, surf life saving, climbing, ropes courses). Topics will address a comparison of practices in outdoor education and nature based tourism. Students will focus on advancing their knowledge and applied skills in outdoor recreation, opportunities will be made available for advancing competencies. A minimum of 12 days approved fieldwork, workshops and practical exercises will be required to be completed (students are encouraged to acquire accredited competency/professional awards)
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate through written reports a detailed knowledge of the application of professional programs in the outdoor recreation/education industry; demonstrate understanding and acquire detailed knowledge of the theoretical elements of the selected activities; demonstrate performance competency in selected activities; demonstrate the ability to safely plan and implement a program in the selected activities; demonstrate confidence and competence in the conduct of programs for novice and intermediate groups in the selected activities.
Assessment: Written assignment and presentation (1200 words equivalent): 30% + Written Report (1600 words): 40%. + Essay (1200 words): 30% + Satisfactory participation and completion of practical program.
