Synopsis: This unit has been designed for students who wish to experience and gain an understanding of some of Australia's unique wilderness environments. The educational setting for this unit will be on fieldtrips in wilderness locations. Topics will include: Historical perspectives of the relationship between humans and nature; the contributions of education to understanding the natural environment; psycho-evolutionary theory; the nature of wilderness and its influence on human behaviour; aesthetic responses to the natural world. Fieldwork costs to cover transport and accommodation in National Parks will apply.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to understand the historical relationship humans have had with the natural environment; identify how educational processes can contribute to a deeper understanding of wilderness experiences; demonstrate an awareness and understanding of aesthetic preferences the natural environment; demonstrate some understanding of the influence of wilderness experience on human behaviour; understand the therapeutic nature of a wilderness experience.

Assessment: Written assignment (500 words): 10% + Essay (1500 words): 40% + Reflective Essay (2000 words): 50% + Satisfactory attendance and participation on field trips (8 days).
