Synopsis: Curriculum Studies: Primary Health and Physical Education aims to increase knowledge and experience in the unique teaching and learning environment of physical education, and to examine current theory and practice and prepare students for further study in the area of Health and Physical Education.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the Health aspect of this unit students would be expected to have developed knowledge an understanding of concepts and ideas required to teach Health Education; the main concepts and ideas underlying the attitudes and behaviours which contribute to the personal and community well-being; accessing accurate information about health and health-related matters; strategies which will develop in students the ability to make decision about personal and community health matters and to encourage students to take responsibility for such decisions; develop a critical approach towards personal and social factors that influence the quality of life; develop a unit of work. Upon successful completion of the P.E. aspect of this subject students would be expected to have developed knowledge and understanding of skills and understanding in physical education and personal development; teaching strategies for teaching physical education curriculum in the school; the teaching of skills acquisition programs appropriate to the introduction of a Sport Education Policy in schools and community; the Curriculum Standards Framework documents and the implication for school programs; the relevance of research findings in the area of physical education.
Assessment: Assignment - curriculum task (2000 words): 50% + Assignment - practical activity - peer teaching assignment (1200 words): 30% + Assignment - Journal Task (800 words): 20% + Hurdle requirement - 80% attendance
