Synopsis: The philosophy and theory of adventure education. Experiential learning (as participant and leader/facilitator) in outdoor activities such as kayaking, sea kayaking, canoeing, environmental interpretation and remote area first aid. Students focus on facilitating the transfer of adventure experience into life-applicable learning. The unit emphasises planning, utilising, managing, and evaluating the use of small group, problem solving, trust and team building course elements. This unit includes ten days of fieldwork programs (including Remote Area First Aid).

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should have an understanding of the philosophy and theoretical basis of adventure education; knowledge of student-centred teaching methods; the capacity to effectively facilitate small group activities within the adventure education paradigm; the ability to create adventure education curricula; developed competencies in the practical components; an understanding of contemporary issues in adventure education practice; demonstrated the ability to develop reflective skills to enhance further professional development.

Assessment: Assignment (1000 words): 30% + Journal (2000 words): 40% + Practical Program Assessment: 30%. Satisfactory completion of fieldwork is required to pass this unit.
