Business and Economics

Bachelor of Business and Commerce

Course code: 2224 + Off-campus (Gippsland) + Three years full-time, six years part-time + Course coordinator: Dr Mindi Nath + Total credit points required: 144

The course is designed to provide maximum flexibility and to allow depth and breadth in the study of the major business and commerce discipline areas. Its structure provides the capacity to tailor applications and focus on different contexts and different environments while ensuring knowledge of the theory, principles and core elements in the relevant discipline areas.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major in one of the following disciplines taught by the faculty: accounting, business law (off-campus learning only), economics, electronic business (off-campus learning only), human resource management, international business (off-campus learning only), management and marketing.
Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Gippsland campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. These other studies can form a professional specialisation in professional accounting, or a sub-major in finance, information technology, human resource, international management, services management, tourism management and international marketing and commerce. They can also, in some cases, form a second major in a business discipline.
Up to six open electives may also be taken from other campuses or other Monash faculties.

Course structure

The degree requirements are:
(a) Completion of six compulsory units:

(b) Completion of a major of at least eight units (48 credit points) in a discipline from the faculty with at least two units (12 credit points) at each of second and third-year levels. All units taken as part of the major are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
(c) A total of 24 units (144 credit points) over a maximum of 10 years of study
(d) A maximum of 10 first-year-level units (60 credit points)
(e) A minimum of six units (36 credit points) at third-year level, of which at least four (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
(f) An option to include a maximum of six units (36 credit points) in disciplines taught by other faculties or from units offered on campuses other than the campus delivering this program

(g) At least four non-compulsory units (24 credit points) must be outside the main field of study.

Units required for specified majors

Accounting

Students can also choose a professional accounting specialisation in addition to the accounting major. Students who complete the major and the professional specialisation will be eligible for membership of the professional accounting bodies.

Business law

Units required for a professional specialisation

Professional accounting

Students who complete the accounting major and the professional accounting specialisation will be eligible for membership of the professional accounting bodies.

Optional sub-majors have been developed to provide students with guidance towards vocational professional outcomes. Sub-majors include:

Progression to further studies

Completion of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce will enable progression to an honours year and a variety of postgraduate courses either at Monash or other Australian or overseas universities. Details of specific postgraduate courses are available on inquiry from the faculty.

Application procedures

Applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Business and Commerce by
off-campus learning are required to meet the normal entry requirements given above and should be submitted to the Gippsland campus.
