Biotechnology
Coordinator: Dr Kathy Lefevere (Faculty of Science)
Biotechnology
is an exciting area in modern science that has great potential in the
industrial, medical and agricultural sectors. Biotechnology includes practical
applications of knowledge involving many biological processes and its strength
at Monash is that it draws on advances in molecular biology, genetics,
biochemistry, microbiology, chemical science/ engineering, cell biology,
immunology, pharmacology and other disciplines. A major in biotechnology
reflecting all facets of this area includes units from various disciplines
across faculties, departments and schools. Alternatively, this major can be
taken as an undergraduate Diploma in Biotechnology (Research and Management) as
a third science major by overloading concurrently with a degree course. For
information about this diploma, see the 'Outline of undergraduate courses'
section.
The
biotechnology major consists of a total of 48 points of study, consisting of 12
points of core units at both levels two and three, in combination with 24
points of electives, as outlined below. Students should note that 12 points of
the elective units must be taken from the level-three electives.
Note that units marked with an asterisk (*) throughout this discipline outline
are available in both on-campus and OCDL mode.
The
structure of this major is unusual in that it does not include level-one units
but has a prerequisite of either BIO1022, CHM1022*, BIO1626* or CHM1639*
There
are two six-point core (compulsory) unit combinations at level two:
Either
- MOL2011 Molecular biology: genes and their expression, and
- MOL2022 Molecular biology: gene technology and its
application
or
A further 12 points
may be taken as electives from the list below:
- BCH2011 The molecules of life
- BCH2022 Energy metabolism of cells and tissues
- BTH2757 Cellular metabolism
- BTH2766 Introductory microbiology*
- BTH2777 Microbial function and immunology*
- CEL2012 Cell biology
- CHM2736 Instrumental techniques*
- CHM2911 Molecular design and reactivity

- STA2010 Statistical methods for science*
- STA2032 Advanced data analysis
Two
six-point core units must be taken as follows:
- CHE3132 Concepts of bioprocess engineering* and
At least
one six-point unit must be taken from the following list:
- SCI3090 Technology management for scientists 1*
- SCI3094 Technology management for scientists 2*
- SCI3716 Laboratory and workplace management*
(Note that there is a
prohibition between SCI3094 and SCI3716.)
At least 12 points of electives must be taken from the following (List A):
- BCH3031 Advanced molecular biology: modern concepts and applications
- BCH3062 Molecular bioinformatics

(one-semester unit)
- SCI3739 Applied research project# (full-year
unit)
# IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT STUDENTS UNDERTAKE AT
LEAST ONE OF THESE UNITS TO PROVIDE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OF WORKING IN A
SCIENTIFIC OR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT. FOR SCI3741 AND SCI3739, THE
BIOTECHNOLOGY CONTENT OF THE PROJECT AND THE SUPERVISOR'S AGREEMENT MUST BE
APPROVED BY THE BIOTECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR PRIOR TO COMMENCING THE PROJECT.
STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO NOTE THAT SCI3741 AND SCI3739 ARE A PROHIBITED
COMBINATION.
Up to 12 points may be selected from the following (List B):
- ANT3032 Medical laboratory technology
- ANT3052 Human development from conception to birth
- BCH3011 Structural biology and disease
- BCH3022 Cellular organisation: organelle structure and function in health
and disease

Students should note that
prerequisites and prohibitions apply to some of these units. Check the
individual unit entries at the back of this handbook.
