BTH2757Cellular metabolism(SCI)
Jenny Mosse 6 points + Second semester + Three hours of lectures per week and 40 hours laboratory classes per semester + Gippsland and OCDL (in even-numbered year)+ Prerequisites: BTH2746, or BCH2011 + Prohibitions: ASC2657, BCH2022, BCH2042 Synopsis: The subject begins with a general outline of metabolism and bioenergetics, then considers the mechanisms involved in the transport, storage and mobilisation of metabolic fuels. The generation of energy from major dietary components: carbohydrate, protein and lipid precedes a study of photosynthesis. Other biosyntheses discussed include those of carbohydrates, lipids and nucleotides. The integration and control of cellular biochemistry is considered. This includes the role of hormones in metabolic regulation. Practical work is an integral component of the subject, emphasising techniques of preparation and assay and illustrating critical aspects of the theory. Assessment: Assignment work: 20% + Practical work: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 50% |
