Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Bachelor of Education – secondary

Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education - secondary degrees.

The course provides attractive sequences of studies for students in a number of disciplinary areas including education, business/management, tourism, environmental science and sports science.

Course objectives

This is a unique, interdisciplinary program which focuses specifically on the employment and training needs of those seeking to work in the expanding sport and outdoor recreation industries, and in sport and outdoor education, or as secondary school teachers in Vicoria).

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 192 points consisting of:

(a) studies in sport and outdoor recreation (96 points), including studies in academic disciplines appropriate for either the sport and recreation industry and/or teaching at the secondary level and the adult and vocational education sector.

(b) studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in sport and outdoor recreation must satisfy the requirements for the study of two specialist discipline* teaching unit sets (A and B sequence equals specialist discipline teaching set) in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Particular care must be taken in unit choice by those wishing to qualify as health and physical or outdoor education teachers.

* Students wishing to major in physical education are required to complete the AUSTSWIM certificate, included in unit EDF2603 (Swimming and water safety).

** BSOR electives can be chosen from: EDF3603 (Wilderness expedition), EDF3604 (Camp planning and practices), EDF3607 (Social issues in sport and outdoor recreation), EDF3608 (Sport and movement education), EDF3609 (Experiencing the Australian landscape), EDF3610 (Research/project in sport and outdoor recreation) EDF3611 (Advanced outdoor recreation practice), EDF4161 (Sports injury prevention).

*** Education electives can be chosen from: EDF3604 (Camp planning and practice), EDF4205 (Initiatives in health education).

# Discipline electives – (a) Environmental studies (four discipline study units): EDF2232 (Australian ecology and nature studies), EDF3609 (Experiencing the Australian landscape) and another two approved environmental studies discipline units; (b) Health education (four discipline study units): EDF1605 (Lifespan, physical activity and wellness), EDF4205 (Initiatives in health education) and another two approved health education units; (c) Other multidisciplinary studies selected may require four or six units. If six units are required, overload will be necessary in years 2–4.

Students should consult their course coordinator to assist in planning their program.

Fieldwork

Students must successfully complete teaching practice, consisting of 80 days of supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.

Professional recognition

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Bachelor of Education - secondary program of studies, graduates will be qualified for employment as secondary school teachers in Victoria (including health and physical education)* if the approved unit sequence is followed) or in the sport and outdoor recreation field. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities.

* In order to be able to teach physical education outside of Victoria, students should check requirements with their local authority.
