Synopsis

This unit provides an introduction to education more broadly and to notions of learning in education. Students will inquire into and explore learning in a wide range of settings and cultures, drawing on a combination of theoretical and practical perspectives. Opportunities are provided to develop students' awareness of the multiplicity of factors that influence and characterise learning.

Objectives

In the process of studying this unit students are expected to:

  1. develop a critical understanding of a range of perspectives on learning
  2. develop an awareness of the ways that examining socio-cultural dimensions of learning can provide a richer understanding of all learning experiences
  3. reflect critically on the learning in their own lives and be able to connect this reflection to the learning they observe and study in other settings
  4. articulate and reflect critically on their emerging perspectives on others' learning.

Assessment

Minor assessment task (25%, 1000 word equivalent)
Major Assignment (75%, 3000 word equivalent)
+ Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance and 5 days fieldwork.
