Course description

This course develops practitioner skills on a comprehensive analytical and conceptual basis. It is ideally suited for industrial relations and human resources practitioners and for managers. It focuses upon the workplace while making the necessary connections with the broader institutional and legal framework.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have:

  • completed a bachelors degree from a recognised tertiary institution and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience, or
  • obtained an average grade of credit (minimum of 60%) or above in an executive certificate offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Advanced standing

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Advanced standing is restricted to study completed in the last five years. The program manager assesses advanced standing.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete nine core units (54 points) from the following list:

  • BTX9070 Labour relations law
  • MGX5080 Workplace negotiations
  • MGX5090 Strategic industrial and workplace relations management
  • MGX5160 Advocacy and bargaining
  • MGX5670 Leadership
  • MGX9180 Employee relations
  • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations
  • MGX9600 Managing people and organisations
  • MGX9850 Human resource management

(b) Students must complete three 5000-level elective units (18 points) from the recommended units listed below:

  • MGX5130 Equity and discrimination in the workplace
  • MGX5261 Human resource management issues
  • MGX5551 Strategic human resource management
  • MGX5631 International human resource management
  • Or 5000-level graduate units taught by the Department of Management. In place of two electives taught by the Department of Management, students may enrol in units taught outside the department. Elective selection must meet overall course objectives and receive program manager approval.

Students must study a minimum of six 5000-level units or equivalent.

Students should complete four 9000-level graduate units before commencing 5000-level units.
