This course, offered by the School of Business Systems, aims to provide education and training in methods used in the analysis, design, development and application of computer systems to the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related techniques, practices and procedures in areas such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems, leading to an understanding of the application of computer systems and information technology for business purposes.
The normal entry requirement is a first degree that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Those expecting to complete their degrees in the current year may apply. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications will enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or Executive Certificate in Information Technology.
The
course consists of 12 units (72 credit points), two core units and 10 electives
plus the 0-point unit FIT9001 (Masters transition program). The requirement to
complete FIT9001 only applies to on-campus students. FIT9001 is a 0-point unit
studied over four weeks (weeks three to six) through four two-hour workshops.
This unit must be completed before students can enrol in their second semester
of study. Students may choose elective units from any area of business systems.
Students who have completed a total of eight appropriate units (48 credit
points) but who do not wish to complete the masters program may elect to exit
with the Graduate Diploma of Business Systems (see earlier entry under Graduate
Diploma of Business Systems).
The course structure is as follows:

postgraduate elective units (level 4 or above) chosen from the off-campus
learning units listed below.
(c) Two Faculty of Information Technology electives (including the School of
Business Systems) - these must be level 4 or higher units. Units outside the
school and the off-campus units listed below may only be taken with permission
of the school responsible for the unit.
(d) Two general electives - these must be level 4 or higher units offered units
offered by any school within the university including the Faculty of
Information Technology and the School of Business Systems. Units outside the
school and the off-campus units listed below may only be taken with permission
of the course coordinator and the school responsible for the unit.

The following units are available by off-campus learning (through the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology) and can be counted as business systems electives (with permission from the course director). Note that at least 48 credit points must be completed via on-campus study:
Generally,
students who have completed similar units in previous studies will be required
to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that
have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma. Where credit is
granted, the number of the elective units that can be taken outside the School
of Business Systems is reduced.
Applicants who hold an honours degree in business systems from Monash
University or Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University will
normally be granted advanced standing equivalent to four units.
The Master of Business Systems (Coursework) degree meets the professional-level membership requirements of the Australian Computer Society.
