Bachelor of Business and Commerce/Bachelor of Computing


General Information

Course code: 1794 + Gippsland campus + HECS fees applicable + Attendance optional

Aims

This double-degree course is designed to enable graduates to pursue a computing career in areas requiring a strong business and commercial background, or a career in one of the business discipline areas supported by commercially relevant professional computing skills.

Entry requirements

Satisfactory completion of the VCE, including English (any) with a study score of at least 25, plus two units of General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods at the unit 1 and 2 level. Alternatively, satisfactory completion of qualifications deemed to be equivalent to the VCE, such as interstate Year 12 or International Baccalaureate, or completion of the TAFE Certificate IV or one year of an advanced diploma (formerly associate diploma), or completion of two units with a credit average at university level. These may be studies either on-campus, by off-campus learning or through open learning. Students who have completed the first year of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce or the Bachelor of Computing with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.

Special requirements

PC requirement

Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages. It is also recommended that off-campus learning students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff and access to web-based teaching material.

Course structure

Students must complete at least 204 credit points normally taken over four years of full-time study or the equivalent of part-time study by off-campus learning. Units with a total credit value of at least 96 points must be taken from the Faculty of Information Technology, and at least 108 points must be taken from the Faculty of Business and Economics. The following course requirements must be met:
(a) Completion of six compulsory units:

Note: students are unable to complete an information technology specialisation on the business side of the degree.
(b) Completion of one business major consisting of at least 48 points, including at least 12 points at each of second and third-year levels (one core unit from part (a) may form part of the 48-point requirement). Business majors: accounting, business law, economics, electronic commerce, management and marketing
(c) Completion of one computer major of 96 credit points. Computer majors: system development, business systems and multimedia technology.
(d) Completion of any additional units to complete the minimum of 204 credit points required for the double degree.

Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and Open Learning Australia. The facultyís Credit Assessment and Tracking System (CATS) is a web-based record of credits that have been granted for students in the past. Please go to http://credits.buseco.monash.edu.au/ and follow the instructions to look up studies that you have already completed to obtain a guide to the credits you may receive towards the Bachelor of Business and Commerce.
