Synopsis: Overview of computer organisation and operating principles; number systems, internal data representations, logic and Boolean algebra; CPU; primary memory and secondary memory; input and output devices; system software; common application software; security and anti-virus issues; data communication and computer networks; Internet and World Wide Web; the social aspects of computer applications. Access to the university's computer systems through an Internet service provider is compulsory for off-campus students

Assessment: Assignment: 40% + Examination: 60%

Contact Hours: 4 hours per week

Prohibitions: CSE1200, CSE 1201, COT1130, any introductory computer technology units.
