Synopsis: This subject provides a concise and up-to-date review of advanced multimedia technology, in particular digital television, video and HDTV systems and the integration of digital TV with the Internet. It explores the new standards for digital TV, its implications upon current analogue TV broadcast systems; data-casting techniques, multimedia file formats and compression algorithms and the potential for multi-layered TV pictures and the relevant communication channel/network protocols. The future role of new broadband and mobile multimedia technologies will also be examined together with new wireless networks for multimedia. Strong practical elements will be integrated into the subject.

Assessment: Assignments: 40% + Examination: 60%
