Course description

The Bachelor of Business and Commerce provides an international degree in business and commerce. It is designed to provide maximum flexibility and to allow depth and breadth in the study of the major business and commerce discipline areas. Its structure provides the capacity to tailor applications and focus in different contexts and different environments while ensuring knowledge of the theory, principles and core elements in the relevant discipline areas.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major in one of the following disciplines taught by the faculty: accounting, management or marketing. All units taken as part of the major are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the South Africa campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. They can also, in some cases, form a second major in a business discipline.

Up to six open electives may also be taken from other campuses or other Monash faculties.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

(a) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

  • AFW1001 Introductory accounting A
  • BTW1201 South African business law 1
  • ECW1101 Introductory microeconomics
  • ETW1102 Business statistics
  • MGW1010 Managing people and organisations
  • MKW1120 Marketing theory and practice

(b) Completion of a major of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline from the faculty with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year-levels.

(c) A total of 24 units (144 points) over a maximum of 10 years of study.

(d) A maximum of 10 first-year-level units (60 points).

(e) A minimum of six units (36 points) at third-year level, of which at least four (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(f) An option to include a maximum of six units (36 points) in disciplines taught by other faculties or from units offered on campuses other than the campus delivering this program.

(g) At least four non-compulsory units (24 points) must be outside the main field of study.

Graduates of the accounting major will be equipped to pursue careers in professional accounting and related areas. Students who wish to seek membership of the South African professional body, The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), are advised to include in their enrolment, in addition to all units listed in the accounting major, the following units (graduates wishing to seek membership of the (SAICA) will be required to complete a Certificate in the Theory of Accountancy (CTA) or a fourth-year equivalent at a SAICA-accredited university, until such time as the Monash South Africa fourth year has been SAICA accredited.
