Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)/Bachelor of Social Welfare


General information

Course code: 1802
The double degree allows students to combine the study of journalism with that of social welfare. The degree is structured to ensure that graduates have the necessary capabilities and understandings to work in a wide variety of public and private organisations requiring communication and social welfare backgrounds (eg organisations engaged in in-house journalism, in public relations and promotions or in lobbying).

Entry requirements

In addition to meeting standard entry requirements, all applicants are required to complete a Social Welfare Course Administration Form. This form can be obtained from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form, for a more detailed selection process. Applicants are strongly advised that academic criteria are not the only ones for entry into the course. Other factors such as work experience and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are taken into account.

Professional recognition

This course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

Course structure

A candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)/Bachelor of Social Welfare:
(a) complete at least 192 but not more than 216 points
(b) complete four core subjects (24 points):

or

(c) complete the prescribed sequence in social welfare subjects (96 points) and the prescribed sequence in journalism (48 points)
(d) undertake additional prescribed studies to complete the 192 points needed for the degrees.

Arts minor sequences

The arts minor may be chosen from Australian studies, community studies, gender studies, history-politics, Koorie studies, mass communications, psychology*, sociology or writing.

Sequence for on-campus students

Students should note that the study program below outlines the BA (Journalism)/Bachelor of Social Welfare as a full-time student; obviously this program would differ slightly for part-time/distance education students.

* DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO REPLACE GSC2905 (RADIO JOURNALISM) AND GSC2906 (TV JOURNALISM) WITH GSC2907 (RADIO/TV JOURNALISM) AND EITHER GSC3413 (COMMUNICATION INDUSTRIES AND POLICIES OR GSC3421 (WRITING 1: TECHNIQUES).
# STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SELECT EITHER GSC1601 OR GSC1602 AS THEIR FIRST-LEVEL CORE SUBJECT. STUDENTS WHO INTEND TO UNDERTAKE STUDIES IN PSYCHOLOGY ARE ADVISED TO TAKE GSC1602 RATHER THAN GSC1601 AS THEIR RESEARCH METHODS CORE SUBJECT, AS GSC1601 AND PSY2051 ARE A PROHIBITED COMBINATION.
