AIS1010Introduction to Australian Indigenous Societies I(ART)
Liz Reed, Marlene Drysdale and Barry Judd 6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton, Caulfield, Gippsland and Distance + Prohibitions: KRS2010, GSC1801 Synopsis: The unit will commence with an overview of Australian Indigenous peoples' lives prior to colonisation. It will then focus on Aboriginal religious beliefs and social organisations, 'the frontier' development of theories of 'race' and Aborigines' experiences of racism, 'protection' and missions and reserves, policies of assimilation, self-determination and reconsiliation, land rights and native title, as well as the importance of the oral tradition within Australian Indigenous societies. Assessment: Tutorial exercise (500) words: 10% + Discussion paper (1000 words): 20% + Essay (2000 words): 45% + a one-hour class test (off-campus students are required to sit an exam): 25% |
