Master of Applied Econometrics

Course description

This course offers a wide breadth of knowledge and provides the quantitative skills and expertise required to carry out regression analysis, forecasting and financial market analysis. Students acquire the skills to take responsibility for designing and implementing applied econometric projects and the ability to communicate the results to wider audiences. These skills are extremely attractive to the business and finance community.

Credit for prior studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics or equivalent with an average grade of credit or above may apply for credit exemptions for up to 50 per cent of the value of the masters program, depending upon the units that have been studied in the Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics or in other graduate programs.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete six units (36 points) as follows:

(i) a minimum of two (12 points) from the following list of 9000-level units:

  • ETF9121 Data analysis in business
  • ETF9200 Econometric analysis in business
  • ETF9300 Financial econometrics
  • ETF9350 Econometrics for financial markets
  • ETF9480 Business modelling
  • ETF9700 Mathematics for business
  • ETX9520 Quantitative methods for risk analysis

(ii) a minimum of four units (24 points) from the following list of 5000-level units:

  • ETF5000 Special reading unit 1
  • ETF5010 Special reading unit 2
  • ETF5200 Applied econometrics
  • ETF5231 Business forecasting
  • ETF5300 Applied financial econometrics
  • ETF5400 Special topics in econometrics I
  • ETF5410 Special topics in econometrics II
  • ETF5480 Optimisation for managers
  • ETF5500 Survey data analysis
  • ETF5550 Research project (12 points)
  • ETF5555 Minor thesis (24 points)
  • ETF5600 Quantitative models for business research

(b) students must complete a further six units (36 points) as follows:

(i) minor thesis (24 points) plus two 9000/5000-level units, or

(ii) research project (12 points)* plus four 9000/5000-level elective units (24 points) from another department in the Faculty of Business and Economics or another Faculty in the University, or

(iii) research project (12 points)* plus one of the specialisations listed below (24 points).

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.

    * The research project will be jointly supervised by staff from the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics and from the department which teaches that specialisation.

Specialisations

Students who wish to have a specific specialisation recognised as part of the degree will need to choose the two-unit research project in (b) above and will need to select four elective units according to the following guidelines.

International business

(a) Students must complete two units (12 points) from the following:

  • MGF5181 International business strategy
  • MGX9660 International business theory and practice
  • MGX5730 International trade policy

(b) Two units (12 points) from the following:

  • AFF9730 International finance
  • BTX9190 International trade law
  • MGX5461 Contemporary issues in globalisation

Marketing

Students must complete four units (24 points) from either option A or B below:

Option A

For students without a major studies or degree in marketing:

  • MKF5200 Assessing marketing performance
  • MKF9110 Theory and process of buyer behaviour
  • MKF9120 Marketing research
  • MKX5123 Marketing innovation planning
  • MKX5251 Case studies in strategy
  • MKX5741 Marketing data analysis
  • MKX5751 Delivering customer value
  • MKX9160 Foundations of marketing
  • MKX9261 Integrated marketing communication
Option B

For students with major studies or degree in marketing:

  • MKF5200 Assessing marketing performance
  • MKF5401 Developing a marketing orientation

  • MKF5463 Advanced business behaviour

  • MKX5251 Case studies in strategy

Economics

(a) Students must complete four units (24 points) from either stream A or B below:

Option A

For students without major studies or degree in economics:

  • ECF9210 Introduction to international economics
  • ECF9530 Economics
  • Two of any other ECF9000 units
Option B

For students with major studies or degree in economics:

Finance

(a) Students must complete four units (24 points) from the following:

  • two finance units (12 points) at 9000-level
  • two finance units (12 points) at 5000-level

Business law and taxation

(a) Students must complete a total of four units (24 points) from the following:

  • two business law and taxation units (12 points) at 9000-level
  • two business law and taxation units (12 points) at 5000-level
