Course description

This double-degree course aims to provide a broad-based foundation in business and management while providing existing and aspiring managers with the opportunity of developing specialist knowledge and expertise in human resource management, with an emphasis on strategic management.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

  • a degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average grade of credit or above, and
  • two years of relevant full-time post-degree managerial or professional work experience (preferably four years) of sufficient level and complexity as determined by the course director to enable full participation in the course.

Advanced standing

Candidates should consult the MBA Programs office regarding the advanced standing criteria for the MBA.

Course structure

  1. Students must complete 10 core units (60 points):

  2. Students must complete 10 units (60 points) from the Master of Human Resource Management as follows:

    1. Eight units (48 points) from the following list:

      • MGX5261 Human resource management issues
      • MGX5551 Strategic human resource management
      • MGX5631 International human resource management
      • MGX5670 Leadership
      • MGX9180 Employee relations
      • MGX9660 Managing people and organisations
      • MGX9720 Managing change or
      • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations
      • MGX9850 Human resource management
    2. Two units (12 points) as follows:

      • Two 5000-level units from the Department of Management other departments of the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of Monash University, with the approval of the course director of the Master of Human Resource Management.

Students are permitted to enrol in either MBA9008 (Managing and leading people at work) or MGX9600 (Managing people and organisations). If MBA9008 is completed, students are required to complete the nine MBA core units plus an elective unit selected from MBA-coded units. If MGX9600 is completed, students are required to complete the six MGX core units plus an elective unit selected from MGX-coded units. Selection of units requires course director approval.
