Course description

This course provides current and aspiring managers with the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and expertise in human resource management, with an emphasis on strategic issues. Students commence their studies with foundation units focusing on contemporary issues related to managing human resources, organisational change, and industrial relations. Students then select units to suit their own interests and requirements by choosing from the wide range of elective units offered by the Department of Management. The course involves the study of theoretical and research developments and analysis of contemporary examples of human resource management.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have:

  • completed a bachelors degree from a recognised tertiary institution or equivalent qualification as determined by faculty board and a minimum of two years of relevant employment experience, or
  • obtained an average grade of credit (minimum of 60%) in an executive certificate offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Advanced standing

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Advanced standing is restricted to study completed in the last five years. The program manager assesses advanced standing.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete eight core units (48 points):

  • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations, or
    MGX9180 Employee relations*
  • MGX9600 Managing people and organisations
  • MGX9720 Managing change
  • MGX9850 Human resource management
  • MGX5261 Human resource management issues
  • MGX5631 International human resource management
  • MGX5551 Strategic human resource management
  • MGX5670 Leadership

(b) Students must complete four elective units (24 points) including a minimum of two 5000-level graduate units, from graduate units taught by the Department of Management. In place of two electives taught by the Department of Management, students may enrol in units taught outside the department. Elective selection must meet overall course objectives and receive program manager approval.

Students must study a minimum of six 5000-level units or equivalent.

Students should complete four 9000-level graduate units before commencing 5000-level units.
