Bachelor of Psychology and Management/Marketing

Course code: 2601 + Course abbreviation: BPsychMgtMktg + Three years full-time, six years part-time + Course coordinator: Mr Peter Wagstaff + Total credit points required: 144 + Attendance required

General course information

This course is a unique cross-faculty initiative of the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. While there are a number of universities in Australia, including Monash, offering double degrees in psychology and business, no other institutions offer a single degree combining psychology, management and marketing. The course aims to produce highly trained and proficient graduates who are well qualified to apply their psychological training to work in a business environment. The content of the program will provide students with excellent training for further postgraduate study in psychology and business.

Majors

The degree provides a major sequence in psychology and either management or marketing.

Supporting studies available

Students have the option of one open elective in the degree. All other studies are in the disciplines of psychology, management or marketing.

Workload

All applicants should be able to undertake a minimum workload of four units (24 points) per year via off-campus learning. Off-campus learning students should note that this represents a 50 per cent workload, which would preclude eligibility for Austudy (Austudy requires students to be enrolled in a minimum 75 per cent workload in each semester).

Attendance

Applicants should note the compulsory on-campus attendance requirements of psychology units which require one 12-hour weekend school in each psychology unit. Weekend schools are run three times each semester for many of the business units. Attendance is optional for those students wishing to attend.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Psychology and Management/Marketing normally requires six years of part-time study to complete. Students complete a psychology major with either a management or marketing major, plus compulsory core units.

These fourth-year programs are recognised by the APS and can lead to masters-level professional programs in psychology or to research degrees such as a MSc or PhD.
