Business and Economics

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business and Commerce

General course information

The course has been designed to equip students with a broad range of skills appropriate to work in a variety of vocations. The disciplines from which students may select units for inclusion in the double degree are those taught by the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences and those taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland.

Majors

To complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce, students must complete a major sequence in one of the following disciplines: accounting, business law, economics, electronic business, international business, management or marketing.

To complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts, students must complete a major sequence in gender studies, history-politics, Indonesian, mass communications, sociology or writing.

Supporting studies available

Supporting studies can be chosen from the other disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Students can combine their major with one or more professional specialisations, consisting of a sequence of four units. Bachelor of Arts minor sequences available include those listed above along with Australian studies, community studies and journalism.

Workload

All applicants should be willing to undertake a normal initial workload of 24 points a year by off-campus learning.

Course structure

Students must complete 204 points, including 96 points from the Faculty of Arts and 108 points from the Faculty of Business and Economics.

To complete the Bachelor of Business and Commerce component, students must:

(a) Complete six compulsory units:

(b) Complete a business major of at least 48 points, including at least 12 points at each of second and third levels (one core unit from part (a) may form part of the 48 point requirement).

(c) Complete at least four third-level units from those offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics at the campus delivering this program.

To complete the Bachelor of Arts component, students must:
(a) Complete an arts major of 48 points.
(b) Complete an arts minor of 24 points.
(c) Complete a third first-year sequence of 12 points.

(d) Complete a minimum of 24 points at third-year level.
Students undertaking the double degree must complete a minimum of 36 points at each of second and third-levels, further studies so as to complete a total of 204 points of study and no more than 14 first-level units.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Business and Commerce with an accounting major and professional specialisation sequence is recognised by both CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia as meeting the academic requirements for membership.
