The
Bachelor of Computing course aims to produce graduates who satisfy the
computing needs of industry, government and commerce. It has three majors with
different focuses.
The system development major focuses on the analysis of user requirements and
the design, development and management of computer-based information systems
and applications.
The business systems major focuses on the use of computers and information
systems to solve complex problems in business and government organisations.
Students graduate with a capacity to relate their university studies to the
world of business.
The multimedia technology major focuses on the use, design and development of
network and multimedia systems and applications in industry, business,
entertainment and government.
The Bachelor of Computing normally requires three years of full-time study or six years of part-time off-campus learning study to complete.
Formal entry requirements are detailed in the section on entry level in this guide. For the Bachelor of Computing, students are normally required to have completed a Year 12 program equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education, including studies in English and Mathematics. Mature-age or disadvantaged applicants are assessed on the basis of their overall educational background.
To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Computing with a major in system development, a student must complete 144 points of study, comprising 96 points of compulsory units and 48 points of other units, as outlined below. Each unit is worth six points, apart from GCO3800, which is worth 12 points.
Students take at least 12 points of third-year computing electives from:
and up to 36 points of electives from a list approved by the head of school. Of the 36 points of elective units, at least 12 points must be in units at second-year level or above.

Students also have the option of combining majors to form a double major.
Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia.
