The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education double degree program is a unique, interdisciplinary degree which focuses specifically on the employment and training needs of those seeking employment in the expanding sport and outdoor recreation industries. Upon completion of these degrees graduates will be qualified for employment as primary or secondary teachers (including health and physical education if the approved subject sequence is followed) or in the sport and outdoor recreation field. Opportunities exist for further study.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent including two units of mathematics (any) and have achieved a study score of at least 20 in English units 3 and 4 and a study score of at least 20 in any other three VCE units.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete subjects totalling 192 points consisting of:
(a) Studies in sport and outdoor recreation (96 points), consisting of studies in academic disciplines appropriate for either the sport and recreation industry and/or teaching at the primary or secondary level and the adult and vocational education sector.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), a series of subjects relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in sport and outdoor recreation must satisfy the requirements for the study of two teaching methods in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Department of Education, Employment and Training and non-government authorities. Particular care must be taken in subject choice by those wishing to qualify as health and physical education teachers.
Off-campus fieldwork placement in school settings (mainly in Victoria but also in wider Australia, North America and the South Pacific) is an integral part of the course for every student. Other off-campus fieldwork activities provide students, as individuals or in small groups, with opportunities to collect data, test theories, and observe phenomena relevant to all areas of education.
