Introduction

Clayton

Part I and part II (by 100 per cent coursework) also available by distance education

Course code: 1680, 1681, 1698

Course leaders: Associate Professor Sue McKemmish (archives and records) and Ms June Anderson (librarianship)

The Master of Information Management is offered by the School of Information Management and Systems, either by coursework (75 per cent) and minor thesis (25 per cent), or by coursework alone (100 per cent). This degree consists of two parts: part I provides a general education in either one of two streams, archives and records or librarianship; part II provides for specialisations and advanced study and/or research. Part II of the program can also be taken as a research masters (100 per cent thesis in part II).

Part I of the program is available on campus, by distance education and by mixed delivery mode. The 100 per cent coursework option in part II of the program is also available on campus, by distance education and mixed delivery mode. Part I is equivalent to the Graduate Diploma in Information Management.

The archives and records and librarianship streams provide a professional qualification in their field, the archives and records stream enabling professional qualification as an archivist/records manager, the librarianship studies stream as a librarian or teacher librarian. Accreditation/recognition is being considered by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA), the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA), and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) respectively.

Admission requirements

Part I

Applicants for admission must have qualified for a bachelors degree at a satisfactory level at Monash University or at another tertiary institution approved by the faculty, normally with at least a credit in the third part of a major sequence. (Note that professional recognition as a teacher librarian is contingent on the candidate also gaining a teaching qualification, but a teaching qualification is not a prerequisite for admission to the teacher librarianship special stream.)

Part II

Applicants for admission must normally have completed part I or hold a graduate diploma, or honours degree with a recognised specialisation in information management, archives and records or librarianship or a related field, with grades of at least credit standard.

In special circumstances the faculty may admit to part II an applicant who lacks an appropriate diploma but who has a bachelors degree and professional experience in the field. A candidate admitted in special circumstances may be required to undertake up to an additional semester of coursework.

Special entry provisions are also in place to enable practitioners with three or four years of professional work experience to gain entry to part II after having successfully completed two subjects offered in part II on a non-award basis.

Fees for Australian residents

In 1998 the course fee is $8000 for each part of the program, or pro rata per subject for part-time. Candidates undertaking part II by 100 per cent research pay HECS.
